India has proscribed form buying and selling of arms and link materials to Iraq, Iran and North Korea.
New Delhi has placed an arms embargo on Iraq. But in case of Iran and North Korea the ban extends to areas involving exchange of equipment and technology that can add to nuclear programs run by the two nations. The action is a follow up of the UN Security Council resolution punishing North Korea and Iran for their building up of nuclear arsenal.
The ban has been notified in the Gazette of India as an annual supplementary measure to the Foreign Trade Policy. The sanctions are mandatory keeping in view the unanimous decision of the Security Council in March, 2007. The proposed ban covers export or import of any material, good or technology that is helpful either directly or indirectly to the nuclear or weapons of mass destruction programs run by Iran and North Korea.
Though, India is no way involved in arms trade with any of the banned nations, yet the sanctions would have put under scanner the supply of chemicals and alloy metals and transfer of civilian technologies to Iran. The ban imposed just before the visit of North Korean Vice Foreign Minister Kim Hyong Jun to India is not well perceived in the diplomatic circles.
